    Get PDF
Delays are one of the biggest problems faced by the construction industry. Delays in construction projects have significant financial and social impact to parties involved in the projects. The main objective of this study is to explore the causes of delay in the Vale Malaysia Minerals Project (VMMP) in Lumut, Perak. This study was conducted by using a qualitative approach. A series of face to face interviews were conducted with an expert from the construction organization and VMMP staff. Responses were analysed qualitatively using content analysis. The results revealed that several factors contribute to the delay in VMMP completion, i.e. poor communication, delays in material delivery, and poor management on site, etc. Time and cost overrun were the effect of delays in the construction project. The findings of this study will help project managers and/ or the client to take necessary actions and to use of supply chain management techniques to avoid further delays in future project completion on construction project

Implementation of resource recovery practices among Malaysian construction stakeholders

    Get PDF
Most of the construction stakeholders around the world especially in developing countries are not really aware of the Resource Recovery approaches in contemporary construction projects. Previous studies reported that Resource Recovery issues received less attention from the construction industry stakeholders compared to construction costs and time related issues. However, this trend has changed due to the depletion of non-renewable resources, greenhouse gas emissions and global warming with much effort now being directed to ‘build greener’ construction projects through proper application of the Resource Recovery approach. This study examined current application of Resource Recovery approach among Malaysia’s construction stakeholders. Primary data were gathered from 122 questionnaires returned by Malaysian construction stakeholders that included consultants, contractors and clients . The analysis revealed that the adoption of Resource Recovery was only mildly practiced by the Malaysian construction stakeholders

Towards the significance of decision aid in Building Information Modeling (BIM) software selection process

    Get PDF
Building Information Modeling (BIM) has been considered as a solution in construction industry to numerous problems such as delays, increased lead in times and increased costs. This is due to the concept and characteristic of BIM that will reshaped the way construction project teams work together to increase productivity and improve the final project outcomes (cost, time, quality, safety, functionality, maintainability, etc.).As a result, the construction industry has witnesses numerous of BIM software available in market. Each of this software has offers different function, features. Furthermore, the adoption of BIM required high investment on software, hardware and also training expenses. Thus, there is indentified that there is a need of decision aid for appropriated BIM software selection that fulfill the project needs. However, research indicates that there is limited study attempt to guide decision in BIM software selection problem. Thus, this paper highlight the importance of decision making and support for BIM software selection as it is vital to increase productivity, construction project throughout building lifecycle

Proposed study of Information Communication Technology (ICT) works interface strategy for construction-based project

    Get PDF
The purpose of this research is to formulate and develop an ICT works interface strategy for construction-based project in construction industry.ICT works interface framework will be developed based on requirement engineering approach and work interface mapping. One of the major issues in delivery of ICT works is unavailability of ICT interface strategy and methodology to be referred by ICT contractors or system integrators involved in construction-based project. The problem arise when interfacing processes are not well understood and coordinated properly especially in large scale construction project which has complex tasks of engineering integration. This research is an “action research” where the root of problem is originated from the workplace area of the researcher. This research will identify the common practice of work integration between ICT and engineering, interfacing processes and type of ICT works involved in a construction-based project experienced and managed by KLIA Consultancy Services Sdn Bhd (KLIACS).Qualitative method will be applied where two case studies will be conducted in order to gain information of ICT plan and method used during the project implementation. The expected result of this research would be the creation of an ICT work interface strategy which able to provide interface planning and framework for delivering ICT works involved in construction-based project. It is anticipated that the result would be able to contribute to the improvement of the ICT works interface and project integration as well as the enhancement of the project quality management system of KLIACS.It would also become part of references for the company to manage ICT works for its entire construction-based project. The result is also expected to benefit the government, ICT player

Conceptual design of fuzzy TOPSIS DSS for building information modeling (BIM)

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is playing a significant role in the development of Construction industry.Evaluation of BIM software selection is one of the key roles in successfully BIM adoption.Currently, there is limited study on BIM software selection. With a great potential for integration of MADM and the current Web 2.0 technology, the development of Web DSS based on TOPSIS is desired to solve this problem. In order to develop an effective DSS, the development of subsystem which is TOPSIS would be integrated with fuzzy element. The proposed of this integration is to deal with the vagueness of decision makers in order to evaluate and rating the software and attributes of BIM software selection.Inteads of use crips value, the decision maker will asked to weight and rating through linguistics. For example Very Low (VL), Low (L), Medium Low (ML), Medium (M), Medium High (MH), High (H) and Very High (VH) will used for wighting asessement in BIM software selection. In order to demostrade this proposed DSS, a real construction project which UTHM Multipurpose hall will be deploy

Decision support evaluation for building information modeling software selection

Building Information Modeling (BIM) has shift the construction industry into a new approach in development of project. The effectiveness of BIM towards increasing productivity and quality of project has been reported not only in literature yet project report. Thus, there are numerous of BIM software available with different features and function. This trend has created decision problem among the companies to select the best software that fulfill company need and project needs.Hence, a web-based Decision Support System (DSS) application namely topsis4BIM has been developed. This paper presented the evaluation the proposed DSS though using the latest technology such as web 2.0 and cloud technology

Criteria Requirement for IBS Vendor Selection

    Get PDF
The role of vendor selection in construction procurement was addressed as a crucial process to achieve project objective not only in conventional construction project, but also in IBS project. Due to the promising advantages of IBS, constructions industry has witness numerous of IBS vendor available in Malaysia market. This situation has created a decision problem among the construction company to select the best vendor that fulfils the project need. Several complexities of construction vendor selection were discussed in past studies. Thus, there is a need of decision aid in IBS vendor selection. A discussion of criteria in construction vendor selection has also been presented. As initial step to develop a decision model, a documental analysis was performed to gather the related IBS vendor selection criteria. Literature suggest that construction vendor selection can be grouped into cost, quality, service, buyer and vendor relationship, assurance supply, payment term, and past performance. After gather and filtering criteria from literature, 38 criteria were found related with IBS vendor selection. This set of criteria is essential to further develop research instrument to identify the criteria of IBS vendor selection in the next phase of research

Lean thinking has been regarded as a success strategy in mass production, realizing cost and time saving while simultaneously improving competitive position in the market. It also can be interpret as a philosophy based on the concept of lean manufacturing. It is about managing and improving the construction process to profitably deliver what the customer need. Despite all the benefits that can be gained by implementing the idea of lean construction, all industry player need to consider the barriers obstructing its application.Through a review of a literature there are numbers of barrier that can be identified. The barriers toward the implementation are discussed in this paper
